Food Allergies and Intolerances

Food intolerances can be described as an adverse reaction to food. Intolerance fall into three groups:
  • Intolerance to certain foods that cause a reaction - i.e. rashes and headaches.
  • Inability to digest certain foods - i.e. lactose intolerance, where there is not enough of the correct enzyme to digest the lactose.
  • Intolerance to certain chemicals - artificial colors, flavorings.

Food allergies are a type of intolerance where the body’s immune system sees the harmless food as harmful and therefore causes an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction that some people have to certain food items can sometimes be fatal.

Foods that may cause an allergic reaction in a very small number of people include milk and dairy products, fish, shellfish, eggs and nuts (particularly peanuts but also cashew, pecan, Brazil and walnuts). Peanuts are often commonly used in Bombay mix, peanut butter, satay sauce, nut-coated cereals, groundnut and arachide oils, salted peanuts, chopped nuts vegetarian and salads that are a mixture of, nuts and fresh fruits.

The Anaphylaxis Campaign has warned everyone to be alert for foods containing flour made from lupin seeds as this can cause allergic reaction similar to that of peanuts.

Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include;
  • Swelling of the throat and mouth.
  • Difficulty in swallowing and breathing.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting and unconsciousness.
  • The fast administration of adrenaline will give relief.
