How can you improve memory?
There is no need to get upset if you cannot remember where
you have put your house keys - you should worry only of you cannot remember
what they are for. Virtually everyone has a memory lapses from time to time.
You bump into an old friend at a party, but cannot remember his name. Are you
worried you are heading for Alzheimer’s disease? You should not be concerned
unless memory impairment becomes a frequent occurrence.
Tips how to improve memory;
- Follow a diet rich in antioxidants, especially vitamins C, E and betacarotene. Researchers suggest that vitamin E is a weapon against Alzheimer’s disease. Further studies show an 80 per cent lower risk for vascular dementia in people consuming adequate amounts of vitamins E and C. Other research has promoted the intake of the B group of vitamins. Vitamins B12 is often deficient in older people, and supplements greatly improve memory.
- Physical exercise increases blood flow to the brain. Walking for 30 minutes every day will improve your memory and all mental functions.
- Mental exercise is equally important. The brain responds to stimulation, with improved circulation nourishing and strengthening nerve cells. Good mental workouts include: scrabble, bridge, crossword puzzles, learning a new language, learning computer skills and reading thought-provoking books.
- Review your medication with your doctor.
- Avoid distractions as inattention is a primary cause of forgetting. Absentmindedness is often associated with older people, but is really a form of inattention. You may forget where you parked your car if you do not pay enough attention when you are parking it. The basic skill of successful memory is to focus and concentrate on the present memory.
- Hormone replacement with oestrogens, testosterone or pregnenalone can be discussed with your doctor.
