The Thyroid gland is an organ located in front of your neck & release hormones that control your metabolism, breathing, heart rate, nervous system, weight, body temperature & many other functions in the body. When the Thyroid gland is overactive, the body's processes speed up & you may experience nervousness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, hand tremor, excessive sweating, weight loss, sleep problem etc.

Causes: When thyroid gland makes too much T3 & T4, it is defined as HYPERTHYROIDISM. The most common cause of Hyperthyroidism is
  • Autoimmune disorder Graves' disease. In this disorder, the body makes an antibody ( a protein produced by the body to protect against a virus or bacteria) called thyroid- stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) that causes the thyroid gland to make too much thyroid hormone. It is a genetical disorder.
  • Toxic nodular or multinodular goiter, which are lumps or nodules in the thyroid glands that cause the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones.
  • Inflammation of the thyroid gland (Thyroiditis), resulting from a virus or a problem with the immune system may temporarily cause symptoms of Hyperthyroidism.
  • Consumption of too much Iodine may cause the Thyroid gland to overproduce thyroid hormones.

Treatment: Hyperthyroidism can be treated with anti-thyroid medications that interfere with the production of thyroid hormones. Another option is radioactive Iodin therapy to damage the cells that make thyroid hormones. In rare cases when patient do not respond or have side effects from these therapies, surgery to remove the thyroid (either one part of the entire gland) may be necessary. In addition Patient may be prescribed to have Beta-blokers to block the effects of thyroid hormones on your body. Beta-blockers help slow down a rapid heart rate & reduce hand tremors.

Dietary help to ease Hyperthyroidism symptoms: Include Berries, Broccoli,Salmon, Turkey , Yogurt . Eat food high in B-Vitamins & Iron, such as whole Grain (if not allergic), fresh vegetables & sea vegetables. Include Vitamin -C for Iron absorption. Include foods rich in Antioxidants like fresh fruits & vegetables. Avoid refined food products. Eat less red meat & more lean meat, cold water fish or beans for proteins. Use healthy cooking oil like coconut oil & Rice bran oil. Reduce or eliminate transfatty acids, Avoid alcohol & Tobacco. A daily Multivitamin , containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, the B-vitamins & trace minerals , such as magnesium, calcium, zinc & selenium.

Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, Flax seeds, nuts, to help reduce inflammation & boost immunity.

Avoid Ashwagandha. There has been some debates about whether Aswagandha also stimulates Hyperthyroidism.
