Why the brain needs healthy breakfast early in the morning

During a busy morning, it's easy to let breakfast fall low in your list of priorities, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day. If you don't have time to eat before leaving the house, we have lots of breakfast ideas that can be eaten on-the-go or when you get to work.

Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast - that's where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol!

As soon as you get up brain starts worrying about fuel. It calls upon the first neuron to find out how much glucose is available in the blood. The response arrives on behalf of the blood saying there is sugar available only enough for the next 15-20 minutes.

Now brain orders neuron messenger to go & find out what liver has in reserve. Now Liver checks & replies that it has reserve for about 20-25 minutes. So now Brain calculated that, there is about 290 gms of Glucose, which means it will last for about 45 minutes, so now brain gives us signal to have PROPER BREAKFAST.

If we are in a rush or it feels unbearable to eat in the morning, the poor organ will have to put up an emergency. MAXIMUM ALERT: We are getting an economy package. Cortisone, dear, take out whatever you can from the muscle cells, the bone ligaments & from skin collagen.

The Cortisone puts to work all the mechanisms so that the cells open up to let out proteins. These proteins pass through the liver to convert them into blood glucose. This process continues until we get back to eating.

As you can see, whoever thinks it is OK not to eat breakfast, is actually fooling himself/herself: that person is eating his/her own muscles: it is auto devouring himself/ herself. Consequently, the person loses muscle tones & a brain, which instead of occupying on intellectual functions, spends all morning activating the emergency system in order to obtain fuel & food.

When a person starts the day fasting, He/ She starts up an energy saving strategy, because of which the metabolism reduces. The Brain does not know how long the fasting will last (Few hours/few days), so it takes upon the most severe restrictive measures.

That's why if the person decides to have lunch later, the food shall be accepted as an excess, it will be deviated towards the “FAT RESERVE “bank & the person will gain weight.

The reason behind is the muscles are the first ones to be used as fuel bank during the morning fast is because of the cortisol hormone which is predominant during the morning, stimulating the destruction of muscular proteins to convert it into glucose.

Breakfast provides many benefits to our health and well-being

Cognitive function

Breakfast also restores glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function. Many studies have shown how eating breakfast can improve memory and concentration levels and it can also make us happier as it can improve mood and lower stress levels. In studies among children, breakfast can improve attainment, behavior and has been linked to improved grades. Just like any other organ in the body, the brain needs energy to work at it's best!

Energy needs

People's energy needs vary depending on activity levels and life stage but typically men require more energy than women. Growing children require a lot of energy, as an example boys aged 7-10 yrs should consume approx. 1970 kcals per day, and girls aged 7-10 yrs should consume approx. 1740 kcals. For adults, men require approx. 2500 k.cals and women approx. 2000 k.cals per day.
